Constitutional Requirements: 

  • 35 years old (Average is 54 years old)
  • natural born citizen
  • US resident for at least 14 years

Terms And Pay: 

4 years per term
  • 22nd amendment limits the number of terms for each president to 2. 
Salary: $400,000 annually

The Vice President:

  • Constitutionally, presides over the Senate and can only vote in a tie.
  • In recent years, Presidents have involved their vice president in policy discussions and important diplomacy. 
  • The current vice president is Joseph Biden.

Presidential Succession:

-the 25th amendment states that if a VP succeeds a President, the VP seat remains vacant. 

  • If President dies/removed from office, the VP succeeds them.
  • If the VP dies or is removed from office, Speaker of the House is acting President.
    • & so on and so forth with the president pro tempore, secretary of state and many more.

Roles of the President:

  • President is given many roles in the Constitution.

-commander in chief of armed forces
-makes treaties with other nations with 2/3 Senate approval
-nominates and receives ambassadors of other nations
-present the State of the Union speech to Congress
-propose legislation to Congress
-veto legislation
-appoint officials
-request written opinions of administrative officials
-fill administrative vacancies during congressional recesses
